While living in Paris from 1886 to 1888. Vincent van Gogh (Dutch. 1853?C1890) painted more than 20 self-portraits. Lacking funds. he bought a mirror and used himself as a subject in order to pursue the art of figure painting without having to pay fees to a model. This tote features a framed detail from his iconic Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat (1887) in The Met collection.
